Renee Kahn visits “La Ruche”, an artists’ complex in Paris

May 7, 2009 by

Renee Kahn and her arts-writer daughter, Eve, went to Paris together this February. The high point of their trip was a visit to an artists’ complex called “La Ruche,” the Beehive,  located at the outer edge of Montparnasse. Put together out of recycled buildings and artifacts from the 1902 World’s Fair in Paris, it was designed to provide inexpensive places for impoverished artists to live and work, a function it still serves today. Among the early residents were Chagall, Modigliani, Soutine and Brancusi, a stellar cast. They interacted with the poets who lived there and produced some of the best work of their careers in that fertile atmosphere. Eve managed to charm her way in (it’s private) and we got to see inside. The pair of caryatids flanking the main entrance in the photo were also salvaged from the World’s Fair. Read more about La Ruche in Wikipedia
